FAQs for Forming Teams

Q: When does registration start and end for the 2020-2021 season?
A: We will open registration on Thursday, November 5, 2020. End date will be in the first week of December 2020.

Q: How is the age considered in forming teams?
A: Destination Imagination has 4 age categories to participate. Preschool through 2nd grade are encouraged to participate as 'rising stars' in non-competitive category. 3rd - 5th grade level fall into elementary category. 6th - 8th are middle school and 9th - 12th are secondary school levels. If there are mixed age kids in the team, competition level is identified by the oldest kid in the team.

Q: What are different ways that teams are formed within LexDI?
A: We encourage kids to talk to other kids and parents, pre-form their team and register. As registrations for DI come in, we will form teams based on age/grade on a monthly basis. We will form a team when we have at least 5 students who are aligned in terms of age, interest in particular challenge, etc.

Q: What is the minimum number of students on a team?
A: The minimum number of students on a team can be 3 or 4. The only exceptions are if a TM specifies a smaller number, or, we need to form smaller teams once registration ends in (i.e. there are not enough new registrations).

Q: What is the maximum number of students on a team?
A: The maximum number of students on a team is 7.

Q: If there are 8 students who meet the same criteria (e.g. age, meeting time), how will you group them?
A: We will first seek to see if we can find at least two more students who meet similar criteria so that we can form 2 teams of 5 students each. If we are unable to find more students, then we will form a team with the first 7 registered students according to their registration time ("first come first served"). The only exception will be to avoid only one male or female student in a team. For example, among 8 students, we have 6 boys and 2 girls, we will move 1 boy to the waiting list. In the next month's team forming cycle, the students in the waiting list will be the first in queue to join a team.

Q: Do you mix ages for teams?
A: For rising stars (K-2nd grade), or grades at or above 8th grade, we will sometimes mix ages/grades in forming teams. These teams can have members who vary in age by 0-3 years. For 3rd - 7th grades, we prefer to form teams with all members in the same grade. If a team needs to include a younger student, we prefer others on the team to have previously done DI.

Q: For teams that formed early, will they be asked to take on new members if they are not at the maximum number of students?
A: We realize this situation can be sensitive to already formed teams as well as for the new student. We will inquire with both the team and the new student whether they are comfortable with being on an existing team. If either the team or the student is not comfortable, we will look for alternatives for the new student to be on a newly formed team. If both the existing team and new student agree, we will introduce them to each other and have a trial meeting. If after the trial meeting, either party would not like to move ahead, we will look for an alternate team for the new student.
